In his own words, 'There never was a time when I didn't like smoking weed,' Johnny Winter would often say, puffing on a joint during our conversation before a show. As a former addict and alcoholic, he had given up all drugs except for marijuana, which he smoked almost constantly. This aspect of his personality only added to the intrigue surrounding his life and career.

A look at Johnny's impressive credentials reveals a man who was honored numerous times throughout his long and illustrious career. He graced the cover of Guitar World magazine's inaugural issue, was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Southeast Texas Walk of Fame, and won three Grammy Awards. Perhaps most notably, he received the High Times Doobie Award for Lifetime Achievement, which he affectionately referred to as 'The best award I've ever been given.'

My colleague Rick Cusick and I were honored to present this prestigious award to Johnny on stage at the Fillmore NY in 2009, following a performance with his brother Edgar Winter. This moment marked another highlight in an already storied career that spanned over half a century.

From his humble beginnings in the early 1950s to his historic performance at Woodstock's final night in '69 and beyond, Johnny entertained audiences worldwide with his soulful blues and rock music. Even as he approached the twilight of his life, he continued to perform, having last taken the stage just a few nights before his passing.

Despite struggling through a life filled with alienation, addiction, injuries, and illnesses, Johnny emerged as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. His remarkable journey is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft and his unshakeable passion for music.
